For our senior year project, each senior chose a social issue topic that we researched extensively to become experts in. We then transalted our topics into a clock to visually represent our topic. My topic is the effects that social media has on teen depression. When researching, I found that the reason teens experience depression from social media correlates with the time they spend on their phone, which is an average of 8 hours and 39 minutes daily.
I wanted my clock to visually represent the darkness that comes from social media including cyberbullying and dark material they view online. I also wanted my clock to feel like being on your phone late at night, which is a reason a lot of teens feel depressed; the lack of sleep from being on their phones.
DIGITAL CLOCK PROCESS:
Once completing our digital clock, we recreated it physically. This was a very challenging project building a working clock, but I enjoyed learning as I went. I decided to make my clock light up to add a glowing feeling to the phones. I got this effect by placing LED lights inside the clock, and having some of the phone screens be clear so the light shines through them.
We also were required to have a word on our clock to represent our social issue. I chose "illness" to represent how depression is an illness and social media is dangerous to those who have it. When we completed our physical clocks, we laid out all clocks in an exhibit for the Herberger Design School.
