During my sophomore year, I was given the opportunity to create the branding for a start-up company; The Layered Onion. The Layered Onion is a company that created a platform for artists with mental health issues to share their art. When I joined the company, I had the opportunity to create a logo and overall branding and work with others to envision how the brand would expand beyond the logo.
They wanted the company to feel very whimsical, hand-drawn, and organic. This was a fun yet challenging project for me as it was my first time making a logo. I enjoy looking back at this project and seeing how far I've come, but I also appreciate the work that I did at this point in my design career.
BRANDING
GALLERY
When I was able to work in person with The Layered Onion, I was given a great opportunity to create a gallery wall that would be a changing exhibit at a local coffee shop. Because it was their first time making this gallery wall, I was able to create the layout for the wall and assist with curating the art pieces that would be included.
This was my first time creating a gallery wall and was a good learning opportunity for how to design exhibits. I also enjoyed curating the art pieces and was able to meet a lot of the artists, as well as be included in the gallery myself. Overall, I made a lot of connections and met amazing artists through this gallery.
THE SHALLOT
I also had a great opportunity to help create The Shallot, which is a magazine that publishes artists' work from poetry to paintings that have been submitted to us. My job was to help curate which work went in the magazine, as well as helping create the cover of the magazine. It was again a very new experience, but I learned a lot about what a creative director of a magazine, website, etc. goes through. There was a lot of little details that I never knew I would have needed to think about.
